1. Farmers’ Markets
Look hard enough and you’ll find a farmer’s market going on almost every day in Southern California. Some of the larger events are much more than produce vendors, although there are a great set of lessons you can teach your children when buying fresh fruits and vegetables. Many farmers’ markets will also include live performances, family activities, and more. Choose from this list of Certified Southern California Markets.
2. Hiking and Bike Riding
A quick trip around the block is boring, but a fun hike or bike ride where there are bugs, birds, and sweeping vistas might just keep your children’s attention for awhile. And you’ll get a chance to get outside and get some fresh air too. The Borrego Trail in the Whiting Wilderness area and the Wier Canyon Loop near Anaheim are both easy, family-friendly trails.
3. Volunteer
Give back to the community and show your children what it means to be a responsible community member. Food banks, animal shelters, and public parks are just a few examples of organizations that often hold volunteer events. Search through www.VolunteerMatch.org to find volunteer opportunities in Southern California.
4. A Day at the Zoo
Check the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanic Garden website for upcoming events and special exhibits. Bring the kids in the early morning or early evening to visit. The reason? Zoos are much more enjoyable when it’s cool outside and when your kids have energy. What’s more, this is often feeding time, which means the animals will be more active too.
5. Not-So-Ordinary Beach Trips
Forget about building sand castles and snoozing under an umbrella. Rent a kayak in Marina Del Ray, go snorkeling in Santa Monica, or watch for Whales at Dana Harbor. All of these things can be done for less than $40 per person and will be much more memorable than a simple splash in the waves, although that’s fun from time to time too.
