Discipline and punishment are definitely related when dealing with a misbehaving child. However, discipline is something you do for your child on an ongoing basis, where punishment is a one-time event. You don’t discipline a child for breaking curfew; you punish them. Likewise, you set a curfew to show your child discipline.
Discipline, on the other hand, will help teach your child the necessary skills for a well-rounded life.
You may feel that punishment is a necessary teaching tool about the difference between right and wrong, but the reality is that proper discipline will show your child that difference without the need for punishment. Some claim that punishment has reverse effects on a child and can cause antisocial behavior and negative academic performance.
Discipline, on the other hand, will help teach your child the necessary skills for a well-rounded life. Ultimately, a child with proper discipline will be responsible and respectful with their parents and family.
The Golden Rule tells us to treat others how we want to be treated. The same goes for parenting. If you’re a positive person who shows respect, most children will follow your lead.
Instead of handing out harsh punishments when your child does something wrong, respond without anger and reinforce the discipline you already have in place. Work with your child to find a solution to the problem and find out what they learned through the process.
